September 23, 2023:
"Paranoid" on Punk Noir, Mixtape side A.
I cannot resist the call to write a story based on a song title or lyrics, if I find time. I began writing this one inspired by the Black Sabbath song, "Paranoid". After the first, rough draft, I realized something didn't quite fit that original song, so I searched through cover versions (over 20!) and when I found Hellsongs version (which is very different) I knew it was the one. So, ultimately, the final piece was inspired by the Hellsongs version.
(I'm sure you can find the Ozzy/Sabbath one!)

on DarkWinter Literary Magazine.
"Maggie May Be Bored" on bristolnoir.co.uk
This story had been writing itself in my head for a while; in mind, all the urban places in which I've lived and visited, and the fear an old person would feel venturing out on their own in the rougher parts of a city. Finally wrote it down as a flash piece and searched for a home on the Submission Grinder. Bristol Noir seemed perfect. A nice thing about venues that publish on an ongoing basis: accepted Nov04/21, published a week later.
about: The neighbourhood is dangerous, but one night when the TV is not working, Maggie cannot stand to stay in anymore. She ventures out into the dark.
note: they now charge sub fees - not when this was submitted and published.
about: someone is building a snowman. In mind, I had the vision of the small front yard of my childhood home. I recall how it was to build a snowman when there is only a thin blanket of snow on the ground. But it was never a snowman ... quite like this.
about: A woman visits her childhood neighbourhood and the pedestrian tunnel running under railroad tracks. She remembers a scary event from her childhood.
PRINT and eBooks
publisher: Frost Zone Press, Canada
also edited as M.M.
THIS EDITION is Out of Print.
See May 2024 for info. on revised edtion.
My story "Bead Addiction" takes place in a fictional bead shop much like the one I once thought of opening. I had this story idea in mind (and loosely drafted) for over a year before the anthology theme took shape.
The 100-word poem plays a bit on the name and describes a devil in disguise -- or what may lie beneath a seemingly nice, well-liked person. < Haven't we all come across this?
Another drabble in the fourth issue (eBook, and Print versions only -- not online).
Frost Zone Zine 4
A short story in the second issue of Frost Zone ZIne, (and the only time I included anything longer than a drabble or short poem.) This is a dystopian horror tale in an urban setting. The main character is a young women without much hope until a former acquaintance tells her about a strange opportunity.
Hundred Word Horror: BENEATH
Things edited, as M.M. MacLeod:
Ghost to Ghost to Ghost anthology - November, 2025
